Wheezing in toddlers: How to treat?

    Updated on 29 January 2022

The usual sounds that babies and children make when breathing can vary, making it challenging to identify wheezing symptoms. Babies often grunt or sigh as they breathe, but wheezing is distinct. It is a constant noise that occurs during most inhalations and exhalations. There can also be a rattling in your child's chest due to loose mucus moving around when they breathe. You can often hear your baby wheezing as they live, but sometimes the sound is so faint that only a stethoscope can pick it up.

Wheezing in babies can be caused by allergies, Bronchiolitis, and asthma. In some cases, wheezing sounds in babies could also mean a chronic disease such as cystic fibrosis.

    Treatment of Wheezing in toddlers

Here are a few remedies that can be tried before your doctor prescribes any medication:

    1. Humidifier

A humidifier will increase the amount of moisture in the air. This will aid in the loosening of any congestion that is causing your baby to wheeze.

    1. Bulb syringe

Alternatively, if the congestion persists, the use of a bulb syringe device may be beneficial in sucking some of the mucus from the upper airway. Keep in mind that your baby's nasal passages and airways to the lungs are still in the process of developing. If you're going to use a bulb syringe, make sure to use it carefully and that it's disinfected between usage.

    1. Hydration

Being hydrated can be a winner in loosening the mucus of your baby and clearing the nasal passages.

    1. Nebulizer

Using saline with a nebulizer can help your baby feel at ease during wheezing.

These are some home remedies that you can try to get rid of wheezing in your toddler. However, if the wheezing continues to be persistent, a doctor's consultation is a must!
