Pregnancy is an emotional journey that culminates in the happiness of holding your child in your arms. While for some, the start of this journey may be effortless, for others, it might be tough. However, with the numerous advances in the medical field, getting pregnant and enjoying parenthood has now become a possibility for many.

One such development in the field of infertility assistance is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In case, you are thinking of going in for this fertility treatment, it is important for you to understand the myths and facts surrounding it.

    Most Popular Myths Surrounding IVF

Here are some of the most common myths surrounding IVF and the truth behind them:

Myth #1 - IVF will lead to multiple births

The reason behind multiple births because of IVF was the implantation of multiple embryos in the womb. However, the trend of implanting multiple embryos in the hope that at least one would latch has by far stopped. Today, doctors usually prefer placing only one fertilized egg for further development in the womb to ensure a healthy baby.

Myth #2 - Babies born from IVF are “different”

Study findings have proved that other than being a little smaller (at the time of birth) than naturally conceived babies, there is no marked difference between an IVF and a natural baby. In fact, several IVF babies are today parents of naturally conceived babies and are enjoying life just like other individuals.

Myth #3 - IVF raises the risk of cancer

This is one myth that science doesn’t support at all. Several studies have proved that the risk of developing breast or cervical cancer because of the IVF process is minimal. IVF is a fertility treatment and doesn't have any relation with cancer.

Myth #4 - IVF pregnancy will lead to a C-sec

Just because an individual could not conceive naturally does not mean that they cannot also deliver naturally. IVF only helps in conceiving and is neither an indication nor a confirmation of a C-sec delivery. Whether a baby will be delivered through C-section or vaginally can only be known at the time of labour and delivery.

Myth #5 - IVF requires extensive hospitalization

The IVF process does not require the couple to stay at the hospital for more than a couple of hours throughout the IVF cycle. The process is initiated in a laboratory that does not necessitate the presence of the to-be parents. Once the embryo is implanted in the womb successfully, the couple doesn't need to visit the hospital. However, they should go for regular prenatal visits.

Myth #6 - IVF is an expensive process

Though IVF may seem to be expensive, the total cost of the procedure comes out to be much lower than one would expect. With so many healthcare organisations and providers offering IVF services, the cost has come down a lot in the previous few years.

Myth #7 - Physical activity should be avoided after IVF

Once the embryo has been implanted, an IVF pregnancy will more or less progress like a normal pregnancy. Therefore, succumbing to complete bed rest, unless advised by the doctor, may have adverse effects on the pregnancy rather than proving beneficial. It's important to follow the instructions provided by your doctor and not believe in the myths abounding on the Internet.

    The Bottom Line

In Vitro Fertilization or IVF has proved that modern science can do wonders. However, being a recent technology, it has attracted many myths. Whenever in doubt, talk to your doctor, who would not only be able to solve your queries but also soothe your nerves.

Through many articles, i cake to know that, these steroids are given is case of preterm labour, so that the baby lungs get matured. That is obviously fine. But at the same time I'm worried to take the steroids.
